
BIJAM is the short form of Bidhyarthi Jagarn Mancha in Nepali, translated in
English as Student Awareness Forum. It was formed in 1995 with registered (Reg.
.No – 163/052/053) in Parsa District Administration Office and affiliated with
the Social Welfare Council (Affln. 3763/052/053) and PAN (301683733). The focus
of work for the last 18 years has been on increasing the awareness and knowledge
about Drug, HIV & AIDS through many different projects. Recently program on
tuberculosis has been added in the Parsa district as part of TB HIV co-infection
intervention. These programs have been taken the social message to schools,
colleges, factories and through its mass communication programs to the general
public. However, interpersonal communication strategy has been applied amongst
project target group as major intervention of the projects. In more recent years
it has centered on the TB, HIV and drug risk reduction services including
behavior change communication interventions, access to clean needles and
syringes, condom distribution, VCT, STI treatment
and active TB case detection.
BIJAM is renowned in the community for its networking and trying to bring the
community together for fighting against health hazard & other epidemics.
As the HIV & AIDS epidemic has reached concentrated levels among key target
groups BIJAM has been focusing its activities more on care & support and
advocating for the rights of deprived and disadvantaged group. Currently BIJAM
has been implementing HIV & AIDS Comprehensive Package (including community care
centre) in Bara, Parsa and Makwanpur under GFATM Round 7/Save the Children, Drug
Treatment & Rehabilitation Program in Birgunj under UNDP/DFID, Comprehensive
Programme for IDUs, PLHAs, FSWs and their clients in Parsa under ASHA/USAID
fund, HIV & AIDS Comprehensive Package for Migrant and Their Families under UNDP/DFID
and TB Reach project under FHI/Stop TB Program/World Bank. Moreover, American
Corner Birgunj/Community Library has been additionally adjoined with BIJAM as
part of resource centre under American Embassy.
